Lynn Murphy Michalopoulos, LCSW

About
I provide mental health therapy for individuals using a telehealth platform. I work in partnership with individuals and believe that clients have the ability to grow and heal from past traumatic experiences and ongoing daily stressors. I work with clients to create a safe environment to improve emotional-coping and problem-solving skills to address mental health problems such as post
traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. I work with clients that have experienced child abuse and neglect, adult sexual violence and other interpersonal violence. I also work with individuals struggling with racial identity, relationship difficulties and challenges with life transitions. As my work is client-centered and relational, I believe that culture and identity are important aspects of the therapeutic relationship. I use a variety of tools and modalities to address the unique needs of each individual. I believe it is important to use both talk therapy and somatic approaches to treat the whole individual. Some of the modalities within my practice include, dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and other somatic-focused approaches.
Experience
I have been a social worker since 2001 and have worked in a variety of settings including employee assistance programs, academia, the United States Agency for International Development, community-based and international nonprofits, as well as private practice. I am currently an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work where I teach courses on advanced clinical practice and adult trauma. I am also the Director of Global Initiatives at the School of Social Work. I actively engage in global research examining how we can measure post-traumatic stress in different cultural contexts and work with labor migrants in southern Africa addressing their health and mental health needs.
